Current Status And Application Trends Of Footwear Adhesive And Primer Technology

Jun 09, 2025

In the modern shoemaking industry, adhesives and primers are key materials that directly affect the durability, comfort and production efficiency of shoes. With the increasingly stringent environmental regulations and the growing demand for high-performance footwear products from consumers, the technological innovation of footwear adhesives and primers is becoming the focus of industry attention.

Technical characteristics of adhesives

Footwear adhesives are mainly divided into four categories: solvent-based, water-based, hot melt and reactive. Solvent-based adhesives are still widely used in the bonding of leather and synthetic materials due to their strong initial adhesion and fast drying speed. However, due to the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), water-based adhesives have gradually become an alternative. Water-based adhesives are not only environmentally friendly, but also excellent in air permeability and hydrolysis resistance, and are especially suitable for the production of sports shoes and casual shoes.

Hot melt adhesives, with their solvent-free and fast curing characteristics, occupy an important position in automated production lines. They are coated by heating and melting, and quickly solidified after cooling, which greatly improves production efficiency. In addition, reactive adhesives, such as polyurethane adhesives, are often used in the production of high-end shoes due to their high strength and aging resistance.

Technical characteristics of primers

Primers are mainly used in footwear manufacturing to enhance the adhesion of adhesives and improve the bonding strength between the sole and the upper. Modern primer technology focuses on environmental protection and functionality, such as the promotion of water-based primers and UV-curing primers. Water-based primers reduce the emission of harmful solvents while maintaining good film-forming properties and wear resistance. UV-curing primers are quickly cured by ultraviolet irradiation, which greatly shortens the production cycle and is suitable for large-scale automated production.

In addition, the development of functional primers has also become a trend. For example, anti-slip primers can improve the friction of the sole, oil-resistant primers are suitable for industrial shoes, and antibacterial primers meet the special needs of the medical and sports shoe markets.

Future development trends

In the future, footwear adhesives and primers will develop in a more environmentally friendly, efficient and multifunctional direction. The application of bio-based adhesives, degradable materials and intelligent coating technologies will further promote industry changes. As the footwear industry pays more attention to sustainable development, technological innovation will become the core of corporate competitiveness.
