Thixotropic associated thickener HEUR

 

Polyurethane thickener (HEUR) is a water-soluble ethoxylated polyurethane polymer modified with hydrophobic groups. It is a non-ionic associative thickening rheological agent.

 

HEUR consists of two parts: hydrophobic groups and amino polyethers. The hydrophobic groups are some macromolecular alkyl groups. In water-based coatings, they associate with the hydrophobic structures of other chemical components to form a network structure. The amino polyether chain segments can provide chemical stability and viscosity stability. Polyethylene glycol is commonly used to extend the chain through isocyanate, and then alkyl end-capping. Generally, it provides medium and high shear viscosity. The choice of chain extender allows the molecular structure to be selected from linear and branched. After branching, the rheological curve of polyurethane thickener also changes (as shown in the figure), which changes the traditional property of polyurethane thickeners that can only provide medium and high shear viscosity. It can also provide good medium and low shear viscosity. The hydrophobic groups of polyurethane thickener molecules have a strong affinity with the matrix of the coating film, which can enhance the water resistance of the coating film. Since the colloid particles participate in the association, no flocculation will occur, so the coating film can be smooth and have a high gloss, and the resistance and water resistance of the coating are minimally affected. It can be used in water-based architectural and industrial coatings.

 

The addition amount in water-based coatings is 0.1-1.0%. However, in water-based systems with high alcohol ether solvents, the three-dimensional network association effect will disappear, and the thickening effect is basically non-existent.

 

Thickening principle

 

The hydrophobic end of the molecule associates with hydrophobic structures such as colloid particles, surfactants, and pigments, and the hydrophilic end hydrates with water to form a three-dimensional network structure, which is greatly affected by the particle size of the emulsion and other external factors.
